This is the kind of fun I expected it to be. You’ll all be aware that I’ve not played in a long time, and that taking on this site is supposed to keep the guitar at the front of my mind and get me to practice. Kind of justifying it because I’ve taken on a project and it’s up to me to not fall on my butt and fail miserably.

So for a couple of weeks I’ve struggled to do the amount of practice I should, I’ve picked up the guitar late at night and found that as I’ve aged I’ve got a bit less go at the end of the day than I used to. I’ve found though, that just a few minutes working on a chord or a lick is bringing flexibility and ability back to my hands. Dredging my memories, I have a couple of songs in my repertoire, but nothing new yet.

And then the other day one of the big payoffs happened. I was at a business meeting at a clients home, and it happened her husband was there. I noticed a couple of guitars there and after the “real” business was concluded, I chatted a bit about the guitars. He’s learning and sees it as part of some rehab he needs to do. We quickly sat and in a fairly clunky way, bashed out a couple of tunes.

I love to feel I’ve played well. I didn’t that day, but I connected with another human being in a way that made us both smile. I was able to find some three chord songs in my mind (there can’t be more than several million after all), and we made them happen. He’s encouraged, so am I, the client was happy with it too…. This is what music does, I played pretty poorly but I touched two human spirits, including my own.

Being crap on the day was alright, but I don’t want to be there in another couple of months. It hasn’t excused me from getting practice, or getting into the lessons. It has just given me a glimpse of the payoff from chasing something I love.

You know how things look absolutely perfect and you’ve got this great plan and then you get started and nothing’s what it seemed?  I’ve got a bit of a dose of that.  I picked all this up about a week ago and immediately did a few minutes of scales from a website that showed them to me for free.

We’re promoting a couple of complete instruction packages, and they’re great, but this is all about getting people started or back into it for me, so I wandered through the web seeing what I could find.  I figure that after a month of playing some bits and pieces you find on line, you’ll know whether you want to pursue it.  By then you’ll also know that the cash online courses are charging is really good value.  Last week I found some scales, and today, they’re not there.  I’m checking again and I may come up with something, or I might just put a couple of freebies together myself. Check here as often as you want, but remember this isn’t really my main job, stuff will get done when it gets done.

The real trick of course, is that this was all about making sure I wrung the joy out of it.  Straight after I posted last, I got really ill.  By the end of the day I had no focus for playing, and with a throat infection, singing is completely out of the question.  While it’s meant that I have struggled to get time or energy to practice, it has certainly let me get to wanting it.  It confirms that for me, playing now is going to be all about fun.

I got to it late last night.  I looked for the scales I’d used and they’ve dropped off the internet.  I decided to check some you tube videos, the first few were dodgy.  The last was extraordinary.  The guy knew what he was doing and while he cranked out some really great blues, he showed me some little box patterns that had me sounding great for 15 seconds at a time.  For a guy who’s lost the plot, that’s really encouraging.  I know that I still know nothing, but if I can learn 15 second of goodness in one night, and a whole song takes 3 minutes, things aren’t too far off.

I’m working out what everyone will gain from most.  I don’t think it’s right to re post another guy’s video, but chords and scales aren’t anyone’s property so you’ll see some of that soon.  What does anyone else think a guitar beginner’s blog should have on it?

Gidday,  some time back I was a really ordinary guitarist.  Since then, I’ve got a lot worse.  So why take up running electricguitarlessons.net ?  Easy really, playing guitar was a joy, and I’ve got so busy with a bunch of kids and a job and all the things that they entail, that it’s just got squeezed out.  It seems that like so many of us, I only do the things I have to.  If there was a reason that I was compelled to play, I’d get to do more.

Now I’m running a blog about learning to play the guitar, and it seems to be working.  I talk to my son (I taught him to play about 8 years ago, he’s way better than me, was after about 3 months) about the guitar, and we share that.  I talk to my business partner, and we’re all keen that the guitar blog turns into something special.

So with the memories in my mind of being able to get by, and this blog underway, today I reached out and for the first time in years I had a go at some scales.  It’s about time I got it together.  You might have any number of reasons to want to play, but sharing it with someone else is a very special thing, playing for someone else is always different, whether for your kids, or for a lover, or an audience.

What we’re going to do here is look at some things that will make everyone better players, and bring the sheer joy of it to us all.  When I find out something that works for me, I’m going to share it.  You are invited to tell us what’s working for you and what we should research and find.  I’ve only got an hour every so often, but as I get better at this, that will find us great options to play, improve, and do better.

Owning your own electric guitar is very exciting but it also takes a bit of work to make sure that the guitar keep looking and sounding its best.  If you do not take proper care of your electric guitar, it will start to lose its luster as well as the perfect sound.   Below are some basic tips to help you in taking proper care of your guitar so that it will be looking and performing its best for years to come.

Taking care of the Strings

It is very important to wipe down the guitar with a soft cloth after each use, taking extra care to thoroughly scrub each and every string.  Music stores usually carry a cleaning kit made specifically for electric guitars so that you will have all that you need when it comes to caring for your instrument.  It is important to use some type of string lubricant on the strings as well as the fret to help make them last much longer.  The lubricant will help to keep the frets and strings both shiny and slick so that it will extend their life.

Cleaning the Guitar

If you want your guitar to last a long time then you need to clean it on a regular basis.  Your hands can transfer dirt, oil and grime which can build up on the guitar which over time can make the neck of the guitar as well as the strings very sticky.  Always make it a rule to wash your hands before handling your guitar.  Hand sanitizers work best for getting dirt and oil off of your hands without softening them too much.  You do not want to have your fingertips too soft as this can affect your playing.

Storing your Guitar

The best way to protect your guitar from damage is to store it in a hard-shell case when not in use.  There are also soft cases at a cheaper price but the amount of protection they provide is minimal and if the case is dropped, it will do nothing to protect your guitar from getting broken.  You should make sure that the case fits exactly to your guitar so that it will not jiggle around when being transported.  You may also want to invest in a guitar stand for when you are using the guitar; you have a safe place to put it when you are taking a break.  The last thing you want to do is lean it up against the wall or lie it down on the floor.  This leaves it open to getting stepped on or knocked over by accident.

Protect your Guitar from the Heat

You should never leave your guitar in a vehicle over night as the heat can warp the guitar just as cold temperatures can, making it not play correctly.  If you are serious about keeping the guitar in tip top shape you may want to look into a guitar humidifier to keep a constant level of humidity surrounding the guitar when it is stored away.

All of the tips listed above will help to protect your guitar, extending its shelf life giving you years of enjoyment, playing your favorite songs.
